What is the curly girl method...
So as we all no over the past couple of months things have been SHIT to put it frankly and we are all busy trying to get back some normality.
I am excited to be back to work and now have more time to blog and review products to give you the low down on the latest trend and so on...
Let us get straight to the point on why I have reviewed the curly girl method or as I think it should be called education for curly hair. Now we all no with a little research and little practise we can train our selves. My opinion is all this is a very clever detailed instruction Manuel that has been created by Lorraine Massey to educate the nation on unruly hair. (Great)
He's where it goes a bit wrong now that companies have cottoned on they are releasing starter kits for that 30day curl bla, bla, blah and its no-poo doo.
Also here comes the Chinese whispers I was told by a lady the other day that has been following this method that she wanted to use her products. She pulled out 2 products from her bag and pop them on the side.
Here they are...
Now I might not be a scientist but I can say without any pauses that this product is not natural or naturally derived from the flower form. Propane, butane and fragrancies to hide the fact that this product actually should be banned from your bathroom cabinet. Now when this product was in view I decided to let her explain why this product was good to use in the method that is supposed to be free from paraben, sulphates and harmful chemicals. The answer was as aspected it was on the approved products list. Now I decided to do some research and there is an ingredients analyser where you enter the product ingredients and it tells you if it's safe and I am sorry to say this product is not safe. So let's make sure we are following the rules.
Now, this product is defiantly approved and after a quick sniff, I decided to do some research at £12.00 this product will help define your curl and comes in different sizes and smells slightly minty. I have recently used this product my self and I can say that this product is (know your hair approved) and is free of silicones, sulphates and Parabens. My favourite ingredient is spearmint which has a soothing and cooling effect helping to calm the scalp and your need if you going to continue to use Pantene curl mousse.
So the method has worked for thousands of people but this trend is education and understanding your hair. Don't get carried away with Chinese whispers and Instagram icons remember the following rules
Don't forget to prep using a good clarifying shampoo get all those bad chemicals out.
Throw away all them random shampoos you have collected over the years. The reason for this is because your more educated now you understand why there are harsh, drying sulphates and ammonium laureate sulphate which will only make your hair frizzy.
Let's go shopping, time to do your research lets get online and get the goods.
You will need the following.
• Leave-in Conditioner
• Gels / Mousse to help define those curls
Let's go get a hair cut, lets cut them ends off. PS...You don't need to go to some crazy expensive salon that has been curly girl trained your having the ends cut off not a full restyle go to a salon you are comfortable and explain your new routine.
Time to start your new routine and don't forget when drying your hair keep the heat low.
For more info, you can google search curl and your be inundated.
Here are some product that can help you on your way
Are the 90s comeing back ???
Over the past few months I have been busy completing courses and learning new techniques to carry me in to the future of the hair industry and I can not help but notice that the 90s classics are coming back in fashion or have they always been there.
Now in 2020, we have seen a surge in home colouring and that does not need explain as when a pandemic hits everything stops. But as I research more and more I can't help but notice the classic cuts of the 90s. I will defiantly be using what I have learnt and will share my experience with you in the coming weeks but here are a couple of photos to explain what I mean 1990 vs 2020.
When we think back to 1990 we think of the spice girls. But what we have to remember is what was the trend not pigtails and teenage Christina Agulera. Mind you brown and blonde is making a come back. Here are a few 90s styles to help you remember.
2020, hit a lot of the same notes but with more of a wavy twist but the cuts hit the mark just the styling is slightly different. What's your favourite mine is the first picture of the 90s such a 2020 hair trend the big waves through the front gives me all the vibes I need. #AMAZING
Now here are 6 trends of 2020 well for me Jeniffer lopez all the way (clean classy classic).
As you are probably aware the Hair & Beauty industry will hopefully be up and running from July and pre-booking is on everyone's mind or to do list
So what can you expect?
Well, there's has been lots of speculation into what the new rules are and what services will be able to go ahead. There seems to be talk of no talking and conversation to be limited well I can tell you now as a Stylist this will be pretty hard as listening to clients requests is a fundamental part to consultation and you all know how I feel about consultation.
Services will be limited again another speculation is that we as a stylist can only provide a limited collection of services to limit the time spent in the salon. I feel that a good hair wash is a key reason for clients to relax and enjoy a good head rub and to ensure all colour has been correctly removed so I am uncertain on a colour dash service. For those unsure what this Service provides, it involves a quick colour slapped on your roots then hurrying you out the door to complete your wash and style at home. HMMMMM. I can see a lot going wrong with this such as colours not developing correctly or over toning if not washed at the correct time or if a reaction was to occur while you are on your way home. let not hold our breath on that becoming popular.
Yes, a dry cut will be put on hold so we are told but I feel this is a good idea as I like to see the hair in it natural state. Meaning no dry shampoo, gel, mousse, hairspray build-ups and also the hair once washed will allow the stylist to work more accurately meaning a better hair cut. But that is my own opinion. Not sure about how the gents will feel about this one.
We as an industry no the importance of welcoming you all back and making the environment as safe as possible allowing you to have a clean and safe visit.
Top tip please leave your coats and bags at home bring only what you need to limit the risk of cross-contamination oh and don't forget your mask.
If you wish to enquire about future appointments please send me an email with your name number and service required and I will be in contact with you as soon as possible.
See you all soon in the salon.
Top tips for home colouring 2020
Now as we are now aware that it's going to be another 5 weeks till we can get back in the chair. Know Your Hair has your back with the top tips in home colouring. The thing is it goes against all that I believe in as a professional hairdresser. However, with the current situation, we are not able to stick with the rules.
So here we go I no my blog might be too late for you clients that have already taken the home colouring leap but I really thought as a nation we would be busy sorting out bowl cuts and some crazy colouring disaster believe me I have heard a few. The best advice I can give at this stage is to go and contact your hairdresser and get your record card if this is possible what you want is the shade you normally have.
The second trick is to stop googling crazy hair colours and creating a dramatic new change believe me the number of times I heard I just bought a base 5 and it nearly black when the client was blonde, to begin with.
So you got your record card so whats next. So, for example, your colour record says your shade is an 8.3 you properly think what the hell is that. Don’t panic I have found the best way to make this easy to understand. So you online or your in the supermarket and you pick up what you think is the right colour if I was in the supermarket with you I would stop you immediately before you even start shopping is your colour semi or permeant this is so important.
Here is a quick test go to your mirror and take a good look at your roots.
Now to understand this simply if your dark with grey then this is very simple for you. In your case, your colour record might say for example 5.31 you no that if you bye a 5.31 in the supermarket it's going to be very dark I would go a shade lighter always as many companies add more pigment to there colours so it lasts longer.
Now if you're looking in the mirror and see blonde hair but dark root this may be a little bit harder as this will involve lifting your hair to the shade that blends your roots. However there are a couple of options you can try and blend with some makeshift highlights to blend, or its a blonde box dye that might go a bit warm at the roots in my own opinion I would leave it and wait for a professional but of course, this is up to you.
A great tip for blondes with dark root always grab a shade lighter and always stay with ash tones this is your ash blondes normal indicated with a (1) in many colour charts.
